SubTitle: Cherishing the Word of God

This is a message I have been working on I plan to teach soon. Take it and shape to fit you. The aim of the message is to encourage people to cherish God’s Word realizing what it provides for us in our daily lives.

Alternate Titles: God’s Word is Like–
7 Natural Pictures of the Supernatural Word
                        God’s Word for Your Need
                        His Word for My Life

1. God’s Word is like a Fire

Jeremiah 23:29 “ Is not My word like a fire?” says the LORD, “ And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

Fire burns the things that can be burned. God is after the gold and silver in us to shine forth.

2. God’s Word is like a Hammer

Jeremiah 23:29 “ Is not My word like a fire?” says the LORD, “ And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

Illus–Swinging a sledge hammer to break rocks. God wants to separate us from the thing that separates us–sin.

When Jesus came he swung at the heart because he understood it was the hardness of men’s hearts that causes them to become hypocritical, blind, and uncaring.

Illus–Person trapped in a collasped mine. You move the rocks to save the miner. You do not hammer the miner but that which has him pinned. It may hurt him in the process but it is necessary to rescue him.

Keep swinging until it breaks.

3. God’s Word is like a Seed

Luke 8:11 "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

It is not always an explosive moment but often it plants something inside of us that will grow if cultivated. We must not allow it to become choked out.

Must be recieved into good soil of our heart.

A seed contains life. So does the word of God. The God Life is awakened within us as we feast of God’s Word. The image of Christ becomes more and more clear as we allow God’s Word to grown inside us.

4. God’s Word is like Medicine

Proverbs 4:20 My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart;
22 For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.

Unless you take it, it will not do much good. You will need regular doses. Use the right medicine for the right disease.

-Medicine may not always taste the way we like, but we know within it, are properties that we need to be whole. So it is with the Word. Open rebuke is better than secret love.

PSALM 107:20 He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

5. God’s Word is like a Sword

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

-This is the Word of God in the hand of the Master Surgeon, The Holy Spirit.  We are open and laid bare before Him as he exposes the motives of our hearts. God’s Word allows us to discern what is coming from flesh and what is coming from the Holy Spirit.

6. God’s Word is like a Honeycomb

Psalm 119: 103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth!

To the person who understands its value, the word becomes honey to our lips.

Illus– If you honey made in the area where you live, it will contain what you need to fight the allergies that would attack you.

Learn to allow the Holy Spirit to apply the Word to your life.

7. God’s Word is like a Light

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.

-A lamp lights the place for your next step.

-The light shows you the path ahead

God’s Word provides the light we need to live in a world of darkness.
God’s Word provides the light we need for guidance in our immediate decisions.
God’s Word provides the light we need for guidance for our long term decisions.
