THE BASICS OF PRAYER (Pt. 3 of 6)

TEXT: Matthew 6:9 In this manner, therefore, pray:

     Our Father in heaven,
     Hallowed be Your name.
     10 Your kingdom come.
     Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
     As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.(NKJV)

1. REALIZE THAT PRAYER IS A LIFELINE FOR DAILY PROVISION

Matthew 6:9 In this manner, therefore, pray:

     Our Father in heaven,
     Hallowed be Your name.
     10 Your kingdom come.
     Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread
12 And forgive us our debts,
     As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.(NKJV)

ILLUS– An older white-haired couple once shared with me when I was a young pastor. "Where God leads you, He'll feed you. And where God guides, He provides." I have found this to be true. But our part in seeing these provisions is to ask Father and thank Father for them.

It is always a blessing in a restaurant or anywhere where people eat, to see them pause and first thank God for answering their prayer for daily bread.

This verse encourages us to remember to pray for our daily provisions. If we are to do this, then not doing, may very well affect the flow of God's provision into our lives.

2. REALIZE THAT PRAYER OPERATES OUT OF THE PLACE OF FORGIVENESS

Matthew 6:9 In this manner, therefore, pray:

     Our Father in heaven,
     Hallowed be Your name.
     10 Your kingdom come.
     Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
     As we forgive our debtors.

13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.(NKJV)

-We cannot live in the benefits of God's forgiveness when we harbor unforgiveness in our own hearts. Think about it, unforgiveness hinders the Heaven's flow toward our lives.

– Keep a short account on grudges, and unforgiveness. Being bitter is like drinking poison and expecting the other guy to die.

-Asking for forgiveness and giving forgiveness is to be a part of our prayer life.

3. REALIZE THAT PRAYER BRINGS STRENGTH TO ENDURE TEMPTATION

Amen.(NKJV)

-Again we see that Jesus has taught us to ask for Heaven's help when it comes to be tempted. I believe this verse shows us that if we pray and ask God to help us in an area of temptation that it can help secure our victory and expose the enemies plans.

-Praying for this protection concerning temptation also reminds us that we can be tempted and we can give in if we do not seek the grace of God to empower us over it.

4. REALIZE THAT PRAYER KEEPS US POSITIONED TO BE RESCUED FROM EVIL

Amen.(NKJV)

-This is warfare prayer. The awareness and calling out to God to be our deliverer from evil. We need God's goodness operating in our lives to overcome the evil in the world. Good triumphs over evil.

-Literally, Jesus is saying that we are to be delivered form the "wicked or evil one." Satan and his demonic minions are real and we need spiritual power from God to overcome the enemy who rails against us with his evil.

6. REALIZE THAT PRAYER REMINDS US OF WHO IS IN CHARGE AND WHO DESERVES ALL THE GLORY

Amen.(NKJV)

-God is boss. Giving Him the glory is a prviliege. The enemy who is a glory stealer also wants us to covet God's glory like he does.

-This is subtle. Praying that it all belongs to God helps settle it in our hearts and protects us against spiritual pride.

CONCLUSION– Now let us pray this prayer together….Our Father …….
