PRAYER BASICS (Pt. 5 of 6)

Introduction: Dr. Sidlow Baxter was a great man of God who taught many and influenced his generation for Christ. He made a statement that I wish to share with you today. This statement reveals what he certainly saw as a major component that we have to see great victories in our lives and the lives of others.

He said,
"Men may spurn our appeals, reject our message, oppose our arguments, despise our persons; but they are helpless against our prayers."

I believe what he said is true and I believe that the Bible itself teaches us that great things can be accomplished through prayer that cannot be accomplished in any other way. Let's look at such a passage:

TEXT: Mark 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. (KJV)

1. Pray Out of A Place of Desire
v24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray…..

Illus-Augustine once asked a powerful question — "How can He grant you what you do not desire to receive?"

Fervent prayer is rooted is prayer that is strongly energized by the Spirit. What is the Spirit moving upon in your heart today, join Him in that place of desire.

A. Remember to Root Your Desires in His Desires
Ps. 37: 4 Delight yourself also in the LORD,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

B. Let Your Saying and Your Praying be in Agreement
In v23 Jesus tells us to speak in faith to the mountain. He says, "Whosover shall say to this mountain…"

Often we "pray" one way and then "say" another way. When we really beleive we are voicing God's will in prayer then we should also reflect that in our conversations in regard to what God is doing.

C. This is not wishful thinking but WORD-filled thinking.
We are voicing what we strongly believe the Scripture and Spirit are saying it is the will of God in a situation.

Like the Lord's prayer where he calls us to pray "Kingdom of God come and will of God be done." These are in the imperative. We are declaring God's will in the realm of earth as it is in Heaven.

2. Have A Time to Pray
v24 ….when ye pray…..

Illus- Samuel Chadwick: "The one concern of the devil is to keep Christians from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work, prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil. He mocks at our wisdom. But he trembles when we pray."

A. Jesus Drew Aside to Pray
B. He invited His disciples to draw aside to pray.
C. We are told to always be in a state of prayerfulness.
D. To neglect or ignore prayer is to choose less than what God is willing to do for us, in us, and through us.

Illus-Dr. R. A. Torrey: "Nothing lies beyond the reach of prayer except that which lies beyond the will of God. Prayer can do anything, prayer is omnipotent."

3. Pray in Faith Positioning Your Heart to Receive
24…when ye pray, believe that ye receive them….

Illus– A. T. Roberston, a well known Greek scholar of the former generation says of this phrase "That is the test of faith, the kind that sees the fulfilment before it happens."

4. Pray with Expectancy Based on Promise
v24…when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

This very Scripture we are studying is a promise for us to stand on.

Illus– We sing the old hymn, "Standing on the Promises" but are we?

Listen to verse two of this classic song of the Church:

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
when the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
by the living Word of God I shall prevail,
standing on the promises of God.

Dear friends, the very earth we stand on was brought into being by a word declared out of God's mouth. AND….we are invited to speak HIs Word out our mouths and see our mountains moved, our Goliath's felled, and our Red Sea's parted.

Our faith is in God and in His Word. What He promises, He will perform.

CONCLUSION:

Illus— Andrew Murray: "In relation to his people, God works only in answer to their prayer. In prayer we change our natural strength for the supernatural strength of God."

Will you ask God in prayer to help you today? Will you take Him at His Word and stand upon His promise?

-Those of you who have needs, He promised to meet your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
-Those of you who once burned brightly for the Lord and who have drifted from Him, He promises to be faithful to forgive our sins when we confess them.
-To those who do not know the Lord, He promises that whosever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Take God at His Word today, come…….
