Loving What He Loves

By

Want to make a man mad?
Say something mean to his wife or about his wife….that will do it with most guys.

This sermon starter is designed to get you thinking about how Jesus thinks about his Bride–the church. I am going to give you a bullet list and you can take off with it:

  • When Jesus appeared to Saul (later Paul) on the road to Damacus, he said to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” What does this say about how Jesus takes the persecution of his church (his people).
  • By the way, it is important to note, it was not a building or a place being persecuted, it was people.
  • A good question to raise, “Do you give any believers a hard time?” What does Jesus think about this?
  • Compare Ps 22 where it prophetically says Jesus bones would be unjointed and Eph 5 where Paul talks about the joints being joined together. Jesus bore our sin on the cross and his bones where disjointed. Sin still causes the joints in Christ body (now the church) to become disjointed. Eph 5 talks about being knit together and the power of love and growing in maturity. We should pray for joints to connect. Illus–Ezekiel’s dry bone is another picture of this, though it relates to Israel there.
  • Is it important to love what Jesus loves? Does he love the church (believers)?
  • Think about the aim of such a message. What is the goal in sharing a teaching like this? How could it potentially impact and positively change your congregation? What attitude of heart should such a message be preached in?
  • Can you think of examples where you have spoke against the one Jesus loves? What about the congregation down the road? The other denomination across the street?
  • John 13:34-35

Blessings and have a great day!
