Faith in a Mountain Moving God
by Eddie Lawrence

TEXT: Matthew 17:14 And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic[c] and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.”

17 Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”

20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. 21 However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

1. A Mustard Seed
– This represents your faith.

v 20 "if you have faith as a mustard seed"

We often teach and hear about "mountain moving faith", but I want us to look at it in a new way. Let's talk about faith in "mountain moving God." That way, the emphasis on what God does for us, not what we do for Him. Without Him, we can do nothing and that includes moving mountains.

All God requires of us to have a little faith in Who He Is and what He can do.

Illus- Think of faith as the fire required to light a fuse on a stick of dynamite. Now how much fire does it take to light a fuse? See, our faith ignites the fuse.

The fuse represents our connection to God and His power. Okay, now stay with me here. What is the source of the fire? Who lites the fire in our hearts? Why it is the Spirit of God and the word of God.

So, if we are sensitive to God, we will hear the word from God when He speaks and sense the Spirit of God as He quickens our hearts, and move in trustful obedience to what He is saying and where His Spirit is leading. So the fire starts through the Word and Spirit at work in us. When we believe and obey, that lets the fire in us touch the fuse that brings the power from Heaven.

And even the smallest seed contains the God-given principle of life inside it. In the right environment, that little seed will burst forth with the life that it carries and produce what that life was given for it to produce. So it is with you dear friend. God has put His life inside you and in the right environment, that life will begin to spring forth and produce and do what God intended it to do in your life.

2. A Mountain – This represents your problem.
v 20  "you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ "

In the natural world, geologists tell us that the mountain ranges were created by a great upheaval. I believe this took place during the flood that covered the earth. Upheaval and chaos creates mountains that stand before us. So it is in our Christian lives as well.

The context in which Jesus shared this is right after he had cast a demon out of a tormented young man. Often the mountains in our life that need moved are those strongholds that have been built through the activity of the enemy.

Here are few ideas of many that could be listed:

-Areas where we have given ground to the enemy.
There are so many ways we give ground to the enemy-anger, bitterness, besetting sins, gossip, fear of men

-Areas where we have allowed doubt and unbelief to rule us.
Jesus rebuked them for their unbelief. When we are weak and unwilling to believe God, then that allows the enemy free reign because it is through faith that we overcome the world and resist the enemy. It stands to reason if a mustard seed faith has the power to connect us with the God who moves mountains, then the enemy will bring all Hell against us to cause us to doubt God.

-Areas where we cannot see beyond our circumstances to the future God has for us.
Mountains can block our view in the natural and they also block our view in the Spirit.

3. A Miracle – This represents your God.
v 20 "and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you."

We must remember that the aged John the Apostle wrote, "Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world."

v21 teaches us that in order to have the Holy Spirit flowing through us with the power to dislodge demonic structures and activity we need to be in close communion with our God through prayer and fasting. There is a sense in which the things that have a hold on us must be broken through prayer and fasting so we can break others loose from what has a hold on them

Prayer and Fasting – Because Jesus was firmly connected to the God that moves mountains then He had the faith to see the mountains created by the upheaval of the enemy moved out of His path.

Conclusion – What has the enemy placed before you that needs moved out of the way? Do you sense the Spirit of God inside you agreeing with the Word of God just preached to you? Will you choose to believe God to move that mountain? Will you set your heart to go deeper in communion with Him, even through prayer and fasting, in order to see that mountain moved?

The God whom you serve is the God who moves mountains and He can move yours.
