Say it with Love – Advice for Pastors

Posted by: | Comments (0)

As the song says, "What the world needs now is love, sweet, love…" This is so true. And it is really important that the preacher ministers to his people in love. Consider the following four observations regarding sermons that are preached in love and about love.

1. In every sermon you preach be sure to remind people that God loves them. This should not be assumed or go unsaid. Regardless of the subject, the love of God touches it in some way, find that touch point and mention it.

2. Memorize verses on the love of God so that you can sprinkle them into the service, the sermon, and your conversations with people. Nothing encourages like knowing that you are loved. People have to be reminded because there is so much war against them to seduce them to believe that God does not really care about them. Be a voice of love and share many words of love.

3. Remember that preaching is more than words. People not only listen to what you preach but watch how you live. Preachers are aware that they live in a fishbowl. The best way to live it is to realize yourself that God loves you too. He is for you and not against you. Live a life of love. When you mess up, repent.

4. Make sure your attitude and face agree with your mouth. If people are watching you with a scowl on your face and hear anger in your voice as you talk about God's love, then the message will not be properly understood. Make sure that your intensity does not come across as anger or aggression. You can be bold, firm, and passionate in a loving way. Strive to do so.

These four observations will hopefully encourage you to be more aware of the need to do what you do in love, whether word or deed. You will be a greater blessing than you already are by loving more.

Sermon Outline Basics

Sermon Outline Basics

This article will address the seven basic building blocks of a sermon. Entire books have been written on just one of these elements so please understand the few sentences I offer are just enough to head you in the right direction. Now let's take just a peek at each of them.

1. Title

The title is much more important that you think. You want a title that will encapsulate the message in just a few words. Let me give you an example — Living On the Wrong Side of Your Hurt! This title tells a story, carries deep emotion, and offers hope, all in eight words. A title should create interest, curiosity, or longing in within a person's heart when heard or read.

2. Introduction
A good introduction will move the audience from where they are to join you in what you want to share with them. Think of it as a bridge built to bring people out of their daily world to where you are with a desire to hear what you have to say. Be careful that it is not too long. It is just the beginning of the sermon, not the sermon itself.

3. Text
A sermon must rest on eternal truth. The Bible is the book preachers must use as the authority in their life and in their ministry. Think of it as the foundation. Everything you share should rest securely upon it without contradiction. What you say must rest upon what God has said. In this manner, you are connecting the spirits of the people with the Spirit of God.

4. Transitions
A sermon that the people are able to understand and follow will have good transitions included within it. Little is said about this, but transitions are very important. From each element to the next there should be transitions that tie them all together in a beautiful flow that enters the human heart.

5. Main Points
Without being a wisecrack, the main points are the main points. They are the main statements that you want to make. Try to keep these from three to five in number. If you go beyond that you will be pressed for time or take too much time. Word these points in such a way that they can be easily understood and remembered.

Within these main points there will be other content such as explanation, illustration and application. Some preachers enjoy alliterating their points so they can be easily remembered. Others will make each point make a statement or a question. There are many ways this can be done, so give your people a variety and it will keep you fresh.

6. Conclusion

This is the time and place you draw the noose so to speak. It is the summarizing of what has been said to complete the sermon. It will lead the people to the last element which is the invitation. As one preacher said, "In preaching you tell them what you are going to tell them, then you tell them, then you tell them what you told them." The "tell them what you told them" part is the invitation.

7. Invitation
This is the point where you call the audience to action. It answers the question, "What are you going to do about what you have heard?" It is the extending of an invitation to a better life and to make a difference so we will live in a better world and to ulitmately enjoy the eternal world.

These seven elements are the basic building blocks of a sermon. Familarize yourself with them and learn as much as you can. It will only help you to become a better preacher. The preacher who excels in the basics will soon soar in the advanced.

All the sermons in the Monday Morning Preacher's Packages that are part of the Sermon Seedbed subscription service have these elements and help preachers in the structure and delivery of their sermons. Check out these packages here.

How to Record Sermons and Make Them Available for Download

from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Almost all faiths can prosper by sharing their message with others. Recording sermons and posting them on the internet is easy to do and does not require a lot of money.

Steps

  1. Find someone in the group that has experience with posting information to the internet or willing to learn. The process is not difficult but has several steps. This would be an ideal project for the youth group to take on or anyone in the web design business.
  2. Record the sermon. Find a way to patch a computer into the sound system. Look for right and left channel out connectors or a headphone monitor plug. You will need recording and editing software. There are several free programs available for download such as Audacity. Programs for purchase such as Propaganda will make the process of recording and uploading the file easier.
  3. Edit the recording. Take out what ever is not necessary such as silent moments.
  4. Export the edited recording in the MP3 format.
  5. Upload the MP3 file to a web host like SermonAudio or MP3-Sermons.
  6. Create a link from your website to the sermon.
  7. Announce to all the existence of your recording. Internet groups such as Google Groups will keep your list of email addresses for you. One posting of the announcement will sent to all.
  8. Consider creating a Podcast. By clicking on subscription button sermons will be automatically downloaded to the computers, Ipods, and other MP3 players as they are posted.

Tips

  • You will need a web host that offers a lot of space. This does not need to cost a lot of money. Ipowerweb offers 200 GB for $7.95 per month and offers free templates for easy website design. Christian Archives is a new website that provide 1.5 GB of FREE server space and an easy way to provide your members with access to your files.
  • Add the web address of your sermons to all church publications.
  • Announce at church services that the sermons are available for download and encourage them to be shared with all.
  • Those who wish to automatically receive the sermon via a podcast will need special software such as Windows Juice or Doppler and for the Mac Juice or Transistr.
  • Promote your sermon downloads by using the RSS feed capability that is built into your internet group. When a visitor clicks on the RSS feed button for ever more your sermon feed will appear in their favorites. RSS stands for "really simple syndication". Add the RSS link for your internet group to your organization’s homepage.

Warnings

  • If your sermons become very popular you can get hit with extra bandwith use charges from your webhost. This is not bad news. It means that your message is being received by thousands.

Things You’ll Need

  • Computer with recording software
  • Website to upload MP3 files to.
  • Internet Group to announce that new recordings are available for download
