Following is a simple sermon that we all need to be reminded of. Take the sermon outline and fill it in with your own Bible study material.

by Eddie Lawrence

Introduction: At night before you get into bed, if you are like most people, you take off your shoes, socks, and clothes and put on your sleepwear. I want to talk to you about a few more things you need to take off before you end the day or begin the day for that matter.

Colossians 3:8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.

WORD STUDY INFO FROM A.T. ROBERTSON ON VERSE 8
3:8 {But now} (\nuni de\). Emphatic form of \nun\ in decided
contrast (to \pote\ in verse 7) in the resurrection life of
2:12; 3:1. {Put ye also away} (\apothesthe kai humeis\). Second
aorist middle imperative of old verb \apotithˆmi\, to put away,
lay aside like old clothes. This metaphor of clothing Paul now
uses with several verbs (\apothesthe\ here, \apekdusamenoi\ in
verse 9, \endusamenoi\ in verse 10, \endusasthe\ in verse
12). {All these} (\ta panta\). The whole bunch of filthy rags
(anger \orgˆn\, wrath \thumon\, malice \kakian\, railing
\blasphˆmian\, shameful speaking \aischrologian\). See somewhat
similar lists of vices in Col 3:5; Ga 5:20; Eph 4:29-31. These
words have all been discussed except \aischrologian\, an old word
for low and obscene speech which occurs here only in the N.T. It
is made from \aischrologos\ (\aischros\ as in 1Co 11:6 and that
from \aischos\, disgrace). Note also the addition of "out of your
mouth" (\ek tou stomatos hum“n\). The word was used for both
abusive and filthy talk and Lightfoot combines both ideas as
often happens. Such language should never come out of the mouth
of a Christian living the new life in Christ.

Six Things to Put Off Before Tomorrow Are:

1. Anger

This word is also used in Ephesians 4:26. Albert Barnes gives some guidelines to help us know when we are getting sinfully angry:

Anger is sinful in the following circumstances:
(1.) When it is excited without any sufficient cause—when we are in no danger, and do not
need it for a protection. We should be safe without it.
(2.) When it transcends the cause, if any cause really exists. All that is beyond the necessity of
immediate self-protection is apart from its design, and is wrong.
(3.) When it is against the person rather than the offence. The object is not to injure another; it
is to protect ourselves.
(4.) When it is attended with the desire of revenge. That is always wrong, Ro 12:17,19.
(5.) When it is cherished and heightened by reflection. And
(6.) when there is an unforgiving spirit;  (Barnes New Testament Notes Albert Barnes)

2. Wrath
Robertson says of this word as it occurs in Eph. 4:26 Danger in settled mood of anger. \Parorgismos\
(provocation), from \parorgiz“\, to exasperate to anger

3. Malice
Rather, "with all evil"—kakia. Every kind and sort of evil is to be put away,
and you are to manifest only that which is good. (Barnes)

4. Blasphemy
The word here seems to mean all injurious and calumnious speaking—whether against God or
man.(Albert Barnes)

5. Filthy Language
Filthy communication out of your mouth. Lewd, indecent, and immodest discourse. …
The conversation of the heathen everywhere abounds with this. A pure method of conversation
among men is the fruit of Christianity. (Albert Barnes)

6. Lying
The reason for putting away lying, stated in Eph 4:25, is, that we "are members one of another"-
or are brethren. The reason assigned here is, that we have put off the old man with his deeds. The
sense is, that lying is one of the fruits of sin. It is that which the corrupt nature of man naturally
produces; and when that is put off, then all that that nature produces should be also put off with it.

The vice of lying is a universal fruit of sin, and seems to exist everywhere where the gospel does
not prevail. Comp. See Barnes "Tit 1:12".
There is, perhaps, no single form of sin that reigns so universally in the heathen world.(Albert Barnes)

A.T. ROBERTSON COMMENTS ON THIS VERSE:
3:9 {Lie not to another} (\mˆ pseudesthe eis allˆlous\). Lying
(\pseudos\) could have been included in the preceding list where
it belongs in reality. But it is put more pointedly thus in the
prohibition (\mˆ\ and the present middle imperative). It means
either "stop lying" or "do not have the habit of lying." {Seeing
that ye have put off} (\apekdusamenoi\). First aorist middle
participle (causal sense of the circumstantial participle) of the
double compound verb \apekduomai\, for which see 2:15. The
\apo\ has the perfective sense (wholly), "having stripped clean
off." The same metaphor as \apothesthe\ in verse 8. {The old
man} (\ton palaion anthr“pon\). Here Paul brings in another
metaphor (mixes his metaphors as he often does), that of the old
life of sin regarded as "the ancient man" of sin already
crucified (Ro 6:6) and dropped now once and for all as a mode
of life (aorist tense). See same figure in Eph 4:22. \Palaios\
is ancient in contrast with \neos\ (young, new) as in Mt 9:17
or \kainos\ (fresh, unused) as in Mt 13:52. {With his doings}
(\sun tais praxesin autou\). Practice must square with
profession.

Confidence in A Crisis — sermon notes

Posted by: | Comments (0)

(The following sermon notes are contributed by Pastor David O. Cofield. Thanks Pastor David for the great work. You can check out his blog at www.energizingword.org)

Confidence in a Crisis
Daniel 6

This is the most familiar of all of Daniel’s stories. Lion’s den. A new
government under Darius had taken over and just like the old regime,
he makes an image of himself for all to pray toward. But Daniel won’t
do it and his consequence is being thrown into the lions den.
There are many lions we all face: bitterness, anger, relational,
parenting, financial, disease, aging. We live in a dog-eat-dog (lion-eat-lion)
world.

May be we get to the point that we think the crisis will be over, but I
remind you Daniel is at least in his late 80’s here.

How can we face it with confidence?

I. Confidence is seen with a thankful attitude.

Verse 3– Daniel had a good spirit or attitude. This is not “Spirit,” but
spirit. He had a good attitude about him.

Verse 10—Daniel was giving thanks and the Bible says, “he knelt.”
Ephesians 5:20 “Giving thanks always for all things to God the
Father…”

Philippians 4:6 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer
and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known
to God;”

When you face a crisis, open your mouth and thank God. There is
power in the spoken Word over your own live.

Life is not fair adding to the fact that the devil hates God and His
followers.

II. Confidence is strengthened with a consistent walk.

This is the first time we learn about Daniel’s daily walk with God and
we are very impressed, but not shocked.

The King noted in verse 20—”the God you continually serve.” Does
our friends, family note that we walk “to a different drum beat?”

Psalm 55: 17 “Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry
aloud, and He shall hear my voice.”

Why did he do this? Praying toward Jerusalem is in obedience to II
Chron. 6:36-39.

He knew the Word of God.
His walk produced purity.—verse 4
His walk produced power. – we’ll see this in a moment
His walk produced protection. – verse 23

III. Confidence is solidified with complete trust in God.

The lions would be purposely starved to be used as executioners. And
note in verse 17 that over the cave a stone was rolled, the king’s signet
was attached so that nothing could be changed. Remember another
time that a stone was rolled over a cave, the king’s secured the place so
nothing could be changed.

This is a foreshadowing of the resurrection in the OT.

Daniel faced the lions knowing well the Lion of Judah.

God sent an angel to his defense. If one angel can slay 185,000
Assyrians, surely one angel can take care of a group of lions.

Doesn’t mean protection that you won’t ever go through trials.

Daniel missed the fiery furnace, but not the den of lions.
Isaiah was sawn in half, Paul’s head was severed and Peter was
crucified upside down.

But Daniel had “no injury -wound.” The word means “to ruin…to hurt,
injure.”

Psalm 55:18 (NIV) “He ransoms me unharmed from the battle waged
against me…”

We may be engaged in the battle, but we don’t have to be wounded by
the battle.

Notice the reason why no “wound” was found. Verse 23 – “because he
believed in his God.”

II Timothy 4: 17—Paul was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. He
had been left alone humanly, but God was with him and delivered him.

Ernest Wadsworth—”Pray for a faith that will not shrink when washed
in the waters of affliction.”

Run to the Kingdom — sermon idea

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The following excerpt is from John Bunyan’s (1628-1688) Sermon, THE HEAVENLY FOOTMAN. based on the phrase, "So run that ye may obtain." found in I Cor. 9:24. I revised the layout slightly, but as you can see, his nine points below would make for some good preaching or a great devotional talk. I am titling the exerpt, RUN TO THE KINGDOM. Enjoy it!

RUN TO THE KINGDOM

Get thy will tipped with the heavenly grace, and resolution against all discouragements, and then thou goest full speed for heaven; but if thou falter in thy will, and be not found there, thou wilt run hobbling and halting all the way thou runnest, and also to be sure thou wilt fall short at last. The Lord give thee a will and courage.

Thus I have done with directing thee how to run to the kingdom; be sure thou keep in memory what I have said unto thee, lest thou lose thy way. But because I would have thee think of them, take all in short in this little bit of paper.

1. Get into the way.
2. Then study on it.
3. Then, strip, and lay aside everything that would hinder.
4.. Beware of by-paths.
5. Do not gaze and stare too much about thee, but be sure to ponder the path of thy feet.
6. Do not stop for any that call after thee, whether it be the world, the flesh, or the devil: for all these will hinder thy journey, if possible.
7. Be not daunted with any discouragements thou meetest with as thou goest.
8. Take heed of stumbling at the cross.
9. Cry hard to God for an enlightened heart, and a willing mind, and God give thee a prosperous journey.

WHEN THE MASTER OF BREAKTHROUGHS SHOWS UP

2 Samuel 5:17 Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. And David heard of it and went down to the stronghold. 18 The Philistines also went and deployed themselves in the Valley of Rephaim. 19 So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?”
And the LORD said to David, “Go up, for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
20 So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The LORD has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.[a] 21 And they left their images there, and David and his men carried them away.

Footnote in Bible Gateway  tells us that the word Baal Perazim (v20) literally means the Master of Breakthroughs. All of us know what it is like for circumstances engineered by the enemy has us hemmed in. In these times, we need breakthrough. David learned that God was the Master of Breakthroughs.

The above passage shows us that God brought breakthrough to David against the Philistines. From David’s life we see what kind of man we need to be to see breakthrough against the barriers before our lives:

1. A MAN WALKING IN HIS ANOINTING

2 Samuel 5:17 Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel,…

-Make sure you do what you do under the anointing of God upon your life when going against the enemy.

2. A MAN PROTECTED IN HIS STRONGHOLD
2 Samuel 5:17 Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. And David heard of it and went down to the stronghold.

-Know how to stay in your stronghold. For the Believer, it is our place in Christ. Our lives are hid with Christ in God.

3. A MAN WHO ENQUIRES BEFORE HE CHARGES
19 So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?”

-The sin of presumption and haste has brought the failure of many well meaning endeavors entered into by God’s people, even His choice servants.

4. A MAN WHO HAS THE COURAGE TO OBEY GOD

-Asking and discerning God’s will is just the first step, doing His will is the step that brings the breakthrough. Too often breakthrough does not come even though it is just one step away, the step of obedience.
