The I Am’s of Jesus

Posted by: Staff | Comments (0)

Following is the opening statement from Dr. Bob Utley's commentary on the Gospel of John. It contains some great preaching ideas and outline information. Enjoy it and preach it!

A. Matthew and Luke begin with Jesus’ birth, Mark begins with His baptism, but John begins before the creation.

B. John presents the full deity of Jesus of Nazareth from the first verse of the first chapter and repeats this emphasis
throughout the Gospel.  The Synoptic Gospels veil this truth until late in their presentations (“The Messianic Secret”).

C. Apparently John develops his Gospel in light of the basic affirmations of the Synoptic Gospels.  He attempts to
supplement and interpret the life and teachings of Jesus in light of the needs of the early church (late first century).

D. John seems to structure his presentation of Jesus the Messiah around

1. seven miracles/signs and their interpretation

2. twenty-seven interviews and/or dialogues with individuals

3. certain worship and feast days

a. the Sabbath

b. the Passover (cf. chapters 5-6)

c. the Tabernacles (cf. chapters 7-10)

d. Hanukkah (cf. 10:22-39)

4. “I Am” statements

a. related to the divine name (YHWH)

1) I am He (4:26; 8:24,28; 13:19; 18:5-6)

2) before Abraham was I am (8:54-59)

b. with predicate nominatives

1) I am the bread of life (6:35, 41, 48, 51)

2) I am the light of the world (8:12)

3) I am the door of the sheepfold (10:7, 9)

4) I am the good shepherd (10:11, 14)

5) I am the resurrection and the life (11:25)

6) I am the way, the truth and the life (14:6)

7) I am the true vine (15:1, 5)

ELEVEN NAMES TO SHOUT ABOUT
By Eddie Lawrence

The following is a simple sermon outline about praising the Divine names of God. It focuses on the compound Divine names and can be used to teach people about praise, prayer, and the nature of God all in one sermon. Of course, they all point to the Jesus and what He has done for us.

Learn to Voice and Praise God using the various names we find attributed to God in Scripture. They tell us something about His nature and character. They give us insight into what He does for us. The compound names sometimes referred to as the Jehovah names are full of application and meaning for us. They also point to Jesus as He was God come in human flesh.

1. Jehovah Jireh means God will provide.
Genesis 22:14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

-When you need provision praise Him as Jehovah Jireh.

2. Jehovah Rophe means God is the one who heals.
Exodus 15:26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in His sight, and wilt give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD That healeth thee.

-When you need healing praise Him as Jehovah Rophe.

3. Jehovah Nissi means God is our banner, our victory.
Exodus 17:15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi: 16 For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

-When you are in battle praise Him as Jehovah Nissi.

4.Jehovah Mekaddish means God is our sanctifier.
Exodus 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily My sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD That doth sanctify you. See also Leviticus 20:8; 21:8; 22:32 Ezekiel 20:12

-When you are in need of cleansing and you have confessed your sin, praise Him as Jehovah Mekaddish.

5. Jehovah Shalom means God is our peace.
Judges 6:23 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. 24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.

-When you sense confusion and distraction praise Him as Jehovah Shalom.

6. Jehovah Sabboath means He is the God of hosts.
1 Samuel 1:3 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.

-When you feel intimated or fearful praise Him as Jehovah Sabboath.

7. Jehovah Rohi means God is my shepherd.
Psalms 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

-When you are needing direction or you feel uncertain and unsafe, praise Him as Jehovah Rohi.

8. Jehovah Sidkenu means God is our righteousness.
Jeremiah 5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. 6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is His name whereby He shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. See also Jeremiah 33:16

-When the enemy accuses you praise Him as Jehovah Sidkenu.

9. Jehovah Elyon means the God Most High.
Psalms 7:17 I will praise the LORD according to His righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD MOST HIGH. See also Psalms 47:2; 97:9

-When you feel overwhelmed, praise Him as Jehovah Elyon.

10. Jehovah Shammah means God is present.
Ezekiel 48:35 It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.

-When you feel isolated, abandoned, or alone, praise Him as Jehovah Shammah.

11. Jesus means Jehovah Saves.
Matthew 1:21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

We pray now through the name of Jesus. All the other names mentioned find their fulfillment for our lives through the Lord Jesus Christ. Think of how God has provided for us through Christ. He heals us through Christ. Christ is our peace. Christ is our sanctifier. Jesus is our victory and so forth. He embodied these truths as God in human flesh who offered Himself for us.

Favor With God — sermon

Posted by: Staff | Comments (0)

Favor with God,  a sermon about favor with God and how it unfolds in our lives.
by Eddie Lawrence

favorkeyText: Luke 1:6 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” 29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS…..38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. (NKJV)

1. An Announcement from God (v26-28)
-Mary was made aware that God was speaking to her. In her case, it was an angel. God has a way of getting our attention when He desires to call us into action for His plans and purposes.

-(List the ways that God can speak to us and briefly share those here in the sermon)

2. A Response of Fear (v29-30)
-Mary was troubled and afraid. We too are initially afraid when God begins revealing what He wants to do. Even God speaking to us can be an intense experience that rattles us.

-(Share a time the Lord spoke to you and you were afraid when you considered what was happening.)

3. A Promise of Favor (v28-29)

-Twice the Lord lets Mary know He has come to favor her. It is important for us to know that God’s intentions for us are always in our best interest. It is a sign of favor when the Lord invites you into what He is doing.

-(share a story of someone who experienced God’s favor because of stepping into God’s plans)

4. A Conception and Birthing

-Mary was told she would conceive and birth a child. With us, there is also the development within us of what God wants to do. It is a step into a process. As we faithfully carry it, it will be brought forth.

-(share how it is important to be patient and allow God to develop things. Use other biblical examples here)

5. A Response of Faith (v38)

-Mary heard, overcame her fear and said "Yes, be it unto me!" She demonstrated faith and obedience.

-Call for people to say yes to what God is speaking to them.

6. A Focus on Jesus (v31)

-Mary’s call was to birth the Christ child.

-When God is at work in us, it is always about forming Christ in us and making him known to others. For us to live is Christ!!!

AUDIO OVERVIEW OF THIS SERMON

Seven Reasons that You Must Believe in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ
by Eddie Lawrence

Introduction– I believe in the literal resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. I believe that is an essential element of the very Gospel presented in the New Testament. I believe that is a foundational doctrine of any true Church.

1 Corinthians 15:12 Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. 14 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. 15 Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. 16 For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. 17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! 18 Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.

Transition– Paul teaches us what the Christian faith would look like if there were no resurrection of Jesus. It would mean that:

1. Jesus Body is Just Dust (v13, 16 Christ is not risen)
The absence of a literal resurrection means the absence of a risen Christ.

2. We Have No Gospel Message
(v14, your faith is empty, v17 faith if futile)
What we believe as Christians is vain, useless, meaningless and without any substance in reality if there is no resurrection. Our faith is vain. If we do not believe the tomb is empty then it leaves us with a faith that is empty.

3. We Witnessess of the Life of Christ are all Liars (v15 we are false witnesses)
No resurrection, not true testimony.

4. The Pulpit is Silent (v14 preaching is empty)
Our preaching is vain without a resurrection. The preacher becomes a fraud peddling a message that is a well fabricated lie without the literal resurrection of Christ.

5. We Have No Remedy for Sin (v17 still in sin)
Romans 10:9-10 teaches us that we must believe in our heart that God raised Jesus from the dead in order to be saved. Without a resurrected Jesus we are hopelessly lost.

6. Those Who Have Died Have Simply Perished (v18)
If there is no resurrection, the bodies of the dead will forever remain in the dead. There will be no reunion or afterlife.

7. Christians Are Saturated with Misery
(19)
We are a miserable group who have held onto a hoax if there is no literal resurrection of the body of Christ.Without the risen Christ we are just bad news people not good news people.

Conlusion–
Dear friends, do not allow unbelievers or even professing Christians who deny the resurrection to trick you into believing it is not an essential. We must agree with the Apostle Paul, the witnessess of the Scripture, the witnessess of history, and the witness of the precious Holy Spirit within us that "HE LIVES!"

Enjoying A Clean Heart — sermon 1 John

Posted by: Staff | Comments (0)

free_1338560Enjoying A Clean Heart

The Bible is clear and offers us the blessing of cleansing of our hearts so we can enjoy a wonderful fellowship with God.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1. A CONDITION MUST BE MET

"If we confess our sins" This means we must agree with God about the true condition of our heart. It is filled with sin and in need of cleansing. It means we take responsibility for our sin. We do not blame others, we own it ourselves and are accountable to God for it.

when we sin, we can and should confess it to God! We should endeavor to maintain a confessing heart so that we can live with a cleansed heart.

2. A FORGIVENESS AND CLEANSING IS GIVEN

Notice, based on the faithfulness of God, you can be forgiven and cleansed. The whole Gospel story is the story of God taking action so that you could be forgiven and cleansed. It is your responsibility to confess and God takes responsibility from there. He forgives and He cleanses. You must stake your claim on the integrity of God that He will do what He says He will do.

The enemy will combat your mind with accusation, but you must stand on God’s Word and agree with God not only about your sin, but also about your forgiveness and cleansing. This is the way, you come to enjoy the cleansed heart. To have one, yet doubt it, robs one of the joy of what he possesses.

What spot is there so dark, that the blood of Jesus cannot wash it clean? Then do not rob the Son of God of the glory he deserves by doubting the efficacy of his blood work.

3. A COMPLETENESS OF CLEANSING IS TO BE EXPECTED

God cleanses us from "all unrighteousness." We are not half-way sinners and God is not a half-way cleanser. Understand that God always does a good job of whatever He does. When He cleanses you, you are clean. Rest in the work He has done. The message of the cross is that it is a finished work, a completed work. Jesus paid it all. When God cleanses, you are clean. Go forth from the moment of confession with an assurance that is firmly rooted in the Character of God and the completeness of salvation in Christ.

The Five Ingredients of Faith – Luke 5

Posted by: Staff | Comments (1)

THE FIVE INGREDIENTS OF FAITH
by Eddie Lawrence

INTRODUCTION- We often talk about taking a step of faith, but actually a step of faith involves several "steps" in order to truly be faith.

TEXT- Luke 5: 1 So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, 2 and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. 3 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
4 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
5 But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” 6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”
9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” 11 So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him. (NKJV)

NOTICE THE FIVE INGREDIENTS OF FAITH IN THE ABOVE PASSAGE:

1. KNOWLEDGE

(V5)..nevertheless at Your word…
Simon (Peter) first had to know what Jesus wanted him to do before he did it. He heard Jesus Word.

The first ingredient is knowledge. In order to act upon something, you first have to know about it.

For example, if the local restaurant had a two-for-one special on their Ribeye Steak Dinners, in order for me to get in on it and experience it, and eat one of those dinners, I would first have to know about the offer.

Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17) the Word of God. How can people be saved if they do not hear? This is the question Paul asked the Romans. In other words, people first have to know what God is saying.

2. BELIEF

(V5) But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.”

Notice Peter’s objection at first, we have already done this and caught nothing. In other words, it is hard to believe that there is any reason in the natural to act on what you are saying.

Yet, Peter made the decision to believe what Jesus said. Had he not chosen to place faith in what Jesus said, he would never have let down the nets.

Once a person knows then they must choose whether or not they believe that knowledge is correct. Is it true?

To continue the restaurant illustration, you would not go for a special offer at a restaurant if you did not believe they were having the special offer. You would assume it would be a waste of time. This was Peter’s first thought, but he moved through it and make the choice to believe Jesus word.

3. COMMITMENT

(v5) …nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.”

Notice Peter says, "I will" let down the net. These is an act of his will. He is commiting himself to doing what Jesus said even before he does it.

If a person has decided that they have heard and know about is true, then the next step is whether or not, they will commit to that truth. A person can believe that it is true that the restaurant is offering a two-for-one special on their ribeye steaks, but may not commit to actually taking the step to utilize the offer. They may hear of others who have gone and eaten one of the steak dinners and who share that is wonderfully delicious and a great deal, and still not get one for themselves. In order to fully experience the truth of what they have heard about and believe to be true, they have to commit to it for themselves. In other words, they head toward the restaurant with the full intent of buying.

4. ACTION

(v6) And when they had done this…

Peter actually followed through on his commitment and did it. This is the action part.

This is the step of acted upon a commitment made. To continue the illustration. This is the step of entering the restaurant, ordering and eating the steak.

5. RESULTS

(v6) And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

The results of Peter’s step of faith is that he saw in the natural what he had already heard, believed, committed to and acted upon in his spirit and life. He experienced a bunch of benefits:

-A boat load of fish "a great number of fish"
-Enough to share with others "signaled to their partners"
-A deeper revelation of Who Jesus was "fell down at Jesus’ knees" An act of worship.
-A deeper revelation of Who he was "sinful man"

-A powerful public witness "all were astonished"
-A realization of purpose for his life "from now on you will catch men"

This last ingredient is really more of a benefit of faith. The result one receives because he has heard and known, believed, committed to and acted upon what he has heard, and experienced it for himself. This is standing up at the table at the restaurant, rubbing your belly, and being fully satisfied and full because you ordered and ate the two-for-one special. You then walk out and become a witness to what you have experienced to others whom you think would enjoy a ribeye steak dinner at a great price.
