Confidence in A Crisis — sermon notes

Confidence in a Crisis
Daniel 6

This is the most familiar of all of Daniel’s stories. Lion’s den. A new
government under Darius had taken over and just like the old regime,
he makes an image of himself for all to pray toward. But Daniel won’t
do it and his consequence is being thrown into the lions den.
There are many lions we all face: bitterness, anger, relational,
parenting, financial, disease, aging. We live in a dog-eat-dog (lion-eat-lion)
world.

May be we get to the point that we think the crisis will be over, but I
remind you Daniel is at least in his late 80’s here.

How can we face it with confidence?

I. Confidence is seen with a thankful attitude.

Verse 3– Daniel had a good spirit or attitude. This is not “Spirit,” but
spirit. He had a good attitude about him.

Verse 10—Daniel was giving thanks and the Bible says, “he knelt.”
Ephesians 5:20 “Giving thanks always for all things to God the
Father…”

Philippians 4:6 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer
and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known
to God;”

When you face a crisis, open your mouth and thank God. There is
power in the spoken Word over your own live.

Life is not fair adding to the fact that the devil hates God and His
followers.

II. Confidence is strengthened with a consistent walk.

This is the first time we learn about Daniel’s daily walk with God and
we are very impressed, but not shocked.

The King noted in verse 20—”the God you continually serve.” Does
our friends, family note that we walk “to a different drum beat?”

Psalm 55: 17 “Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry
aloud, and He shall hear my voice.”

Why did he do this? Praying toward Jerusalem is in obedience to II
Chron. 6:36-39.

He knew the Word of God.
His walk produced purity.—verse 4
His walk produced power. – we’ll see this in a moment
His walk produced protection. – verse 23

III. Confidence is solidified with complete trust in God.

The lions would be purposely starved to be used as executioners. And
note in verse 17 that over the cave a stone was rolled, the king’s signet
was attached so that nothing could be changed. Remember another
time that a stone was rolled over a cave, the king’s secured the place so
nothing could be changed.

This is a foreshadowing of the resurrection in the OT.

Daniel faced the lions knowing well the Lion of Judah.

God sent an angel to his defense. If one angel can slay 185,000
Assyrians, surely one angel can take care of a group of lions.

Doesn’t mean protection that you won’t ever go through trials.

Daniel missed the fiery furnace, but not the den of lions.
Isaiah was sawn in half, Paul’s head was severed and Peter was
crucified upside down.

But Daniel had “no injury -wound.” The word means “to ruin…to hurt,
injure.”

Psalm 55:18 (NIV) “He ransoms me unharmed from the battle waged
against me…”

We may be engaged in the battle, but we don’t have to be wounded by
the battle.

Notice the reason why no “wound” was found. Verse 23 – “because he
believed in his God.”

II Timothy 4: 17—Paul was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. He
had been left alone humanly, but God was with him and delivered him.

Ernest Wadsworth—”Pray for a faith that will not shrink when washed
in the waters of affliction.”

WHEN THE MASTER OF BREAKTHROUGHS SHOWS UP

2 Samuel 5:17 Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. And David heard of it and went down to the stronghold. 18 The Philistines also went and deployed themselves in the Valley of Rephaim. 19 So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?”
And the LORD said to David, “Go up, for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
20 So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The LORD has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.[a] 21 And they left their images there, and David and his men carried them away.

Footnote in Bible Gateway  tells us that the word Baal Perazim (v20) literally means the Master of Breakthroughs. All of us know what it is like for circumstances engineered by the enemy has us hemmed in. In these times, we need breakthrough. David learned that God was the Master of Breakthroughs.

The above passage shows us that God brought breakthrough to David against the Philistines. From David’s life we see what kind of man we need to be to see breakthrough against the barriers before our lives:

1. A MAN WALKING IN HIS ANOINTING

2 Samuel 5:17 Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel,…

-Make sure you do what you do under the anointing of God upon your life when going against the enemy.

2. A MAN PROTECTED IN HIS STRONGHOLD
2 Samuel 5:17 Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. And David heard of it and went down to the stronghold.

-Know how to stay in your stronghold. For the Believer, it is our place in Christ. Our lives are hid with Christ in God.

3. A MAN WHO ENQUIRES BEFORE HE CHARGES
19 So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?”

-The sin of presumption and haste has brought the failure of many well meaning endeavors entered into by God’s people, even His choice servants.

4. A MAN WHO HAS THE COURAGE TO OBEY GOD

-Asking and discerning God’s will is just the first step, doing His will is the step that brings the breakthrough. Too often breakthrough does not come even though it is just one step away, the step of obedience.

Posted by: | Comments (3)

The 7  Ups!
(I received this as an email from a friend and it was one of those pass it on emails. It actually contains a good outline for a teaching, so I thought I would pass it on.Thanks to Corrine from Florida for authoring this..)

God gave us  two ears and one mouth,
so He must have meant  for us to do twice as much listening as  talking.

'He who guards his lips guards  his soul.'
Proverbs 13:3

4. Stand  Up!!  . .  . for what you believe in.

Stand for  something or you will fall for anything.

Philippians 2: 1-5 (The Message) "Every time you cross my mind, I break out in exclamations of thanks to God. Each exclamation is a trigger to prayer. I find myself praying for you with a glad heart. I am so pleased that you have continued on in this with us, believing and proclaiming God’s Message, from the day you heard it right up to the present. There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears.

It’s not at all fanciful for me to think this way about you. My prayers and hopes have deep roots in reality. You have, after all, stuck with me all the way from the time I was thrown in jail, put on trial, and came out of it in one piece. All along you have experienced with me the most generous help from God. He knows how much I love and miss you these days. Sometimes I think I feel as strongly about you as Christ does!"

FOUR FACETS OF GOD PLEASING FAITH

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

There is a key to unlock the realm of the impossible. Without this key, it is impossible to enter the realm of the impossible. What is this key? It is the irreplaceable element in living the Christian life. It is faith. I will add, it is the kind of faith that pleases God. This verse states clearly that "without faith it is impossible to please Him".  There is no ability to please God, no empowerment to live in a way to please God, without faith. Then the verse tells us the kind of faith that does please God.

In the verse before us we see that this "God pleasing faith" has four facets to it.

The Four Facets of God Pleasing Faith are:

1. There is a coming to God involved in it.

"for he who comes to God"

2. There is a knowing that "God is" involved in it.

"must believe that He is"

If you put this as if God was saying it in first person, it would read, "He who comes to me, must believe that I Am." In other words, you know that God is eternal, that He is the same God He has always been. He lives now. He is existing presently in your circumstances to respond to you.

3. There is a realization concerning God’s heart as a giver involved in it.

"He is a rewarder "

God is a giver. For God so loved the world that He gave….  He is not a cosmic slot machine that is used just to dispense gifts to us, but neither is someone who is demanding we do all the giving without any response from Him. All through the New Testament, the truth is emblazoned that God responds as a giver to His children when they approach Him in childlike faith. Remember what Jesus taught in Matthew 7 "How much more will your Heavenly Father give good things to those who ask Him?" James says, "Every good and perfect gift comes from Him." Even the Holy Spirit is a the Father’s gift to us.

4. There is a seeking after God Himself involved in it.

"of those who diligently seek Him."

Notice carefully that the person is seeking the "Giver" not the gift. This is key. Knowing and properly responding to who He is will bring you into the court of what He does.

The is a free sermon by Eddie Lawrence built around the conversion of the Philippian jailor’s encounter with Paul and Silas and yes, Jesus. Enjoy this as well as our other sermon outlines here at Sermon Seedbed.

Did You Hear About What Happened at the Jail Last Night?

Text: Acts 16:25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed27 And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. 28 But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.” 29 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34 Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household. (NKJV)

This dramatic event has several elements that make up its fascinating story.

1. Maintain a Faith Filled Attitude Under Pressure
(Paul and Silas were praying and singing instead of griping and complaining)

2. Expect God to Shake Things Up When Crunch Time is On
(Many, many times in the Bible, we see God’s miracles related to timing. There are a lot of earthquakes, but this one happened at just the right time. Some might think this was a miraculous intervention but just a natural occurence. Hmmmm? Why did the shackles release them but the place did not fall in on them and kill them. Doors opening and chains loosening sounds like some Angels were pretty busy.)

3. Look for Redemptive Opportunities in the Midst of the Shaking
(Often we miss the greatest opportunities by being distracted. Paul seized the opportunity to step in and minister to the jailor who assumed everyone had escaped which would have meant his life. I personally believe Paul had a word of knowledge about what the jailor was about to do because there was no light in the place. I think this added to the Jailor’s awareness that the God to whom Paul and Silas had been singing, was doing something extraoridinary.)

4. Learn to Recieve Good from those Who Once Hurt You
(What a beautiful site to see the jailor washing their stripes. No bitterness in either heart. Wow!)

5. Watch the Ripple Effects of Obedience
(Paul and Silas were able to witness a whole family’s conversion because they kept their faith under pressure.)

Conclusion–What jail or you in this morning? In what way is pressure being placed upon you? How have you been handling it? What changes do you need to make?

This is one of my free sermons that is given to encourage believers to understand some of the dynamics involved where God’s word is being recieved and honored among a people. As with all our sermon outlines, use this bible sermon to bless your people.

The Battle between Faith and Unbelief

Acts 14:1 Now it happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks believed. 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethren. 3 Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.
4 But the multitude of the city was divided: part sided with the Jews, and part with the apostles. 5 And when a violent attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to abuse and stone them, 6 they became aware of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region. 7 And they were preaching the gospel there.

The Battle between Faith and Unbelief

The man who believes nothing will find himself opposed to everything.

The bible tells us a lot about the power of faith, but also about the power of unbelief. Whatever your faith will move you toward, your unbelief will keep you from.

1. A double-minded man is unable in all his ways.
2. Jesus could do no mighty works in Nazareth due to their unbelief.

Unbelief is more than "just not being sure."
Unbelief is choosing not to believe.

When a person is presented with a claim and the evidence is there to back it up, then they decide that they still do not believe, then they are in unbelief.

The Passage which we are studying in Acts 14:1-7 gives us some insights into understanding the struggle taking place when faith and unbelief are active in the same crowd. There are four observations to make. First notice that there was–

1. A Place and A People (v1)

A. The Place (Iconium at the synagogue where people gathered to hear the Scripture taught. It is where God’s Word is being released that faith and unbelief collides.)

B. The People (The Apostles carrying the Word of God in power, the Jews with knowledge of the Old Testament revelation, the Greeks steep in various world viewpoints. Among the Jews and Greeks hearts and minds were being influenced as the Holy Spirit opened their hearts to the truth of the Gospel. Many of them believed. It registered upon their spirits and they embraced it. This is the power of God’s Word at work.)

2. A Passion and A Poison (v2)

A. A Passion (The unbelieving Jews got stirred up. Passion moves us to do something about the object of our passion. They came against the Apostles and those who embraced their teaching.)
B. A Poison (The posion is seen in how they came against the Apostles and believers–by poisoning the minds of the Gentiles. They distributed their poison through trench warfare political tactics. This dynamic is very much alive today. It thrives on fear, suspicion, and is fueled by passion for a cause. It lives in politics, it lives in churches, it lives in the offices of the workplace, it can be found in most anywhere people are. The goal of this is to create division–v4 and opposition –v5, violence and abuse.

3. A Persistence and A Power (v3)

A. The Persistence (They stayed there a long time. They dug in and kept ministering.)
B. The Power (boldness, signs and wonders, and grace were flowing. God was confirming His Word by the release of wonder working power.)

4. A Persecution and A Plan (v4)

A. The Persecution (The enemy took things to the next level. There was an outbreak of violence and abuse. This is the way of the enemy and ubelief. It can take a stand just like faith can take a stand. Persecution has the idea of "to drive away."
B. The Plan (Rather than allow the Gospel message to be isolated and distracted with the enemy’s tactics, they decided to leave a city and reach a region. This is not defeat but rather exporting and expansion. This is seen more than once in the Book of Acts.

This is God’s way of bringing good forth in the face of evil. He does it all the time (Rom. 8:28).

Conclusion–God will do this in your life as well. Don’t allow the tactics of the enemy to cause you to give up. The Devil never trumps the purposes of God and he never check mates God. God is never on the defensive. Remember this and you will have courage in the storm and stamina filled with wisdom to see your way forward into victory. This is the heart of faith!

Move Your Thumb

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Following is a message based on the sermon outline called 3 Steps to Your Destiny. You can see how I took that sermon outline and developed it into a unique sermon. Of course you could use this for a bible study as well. Preach it and use it to teach your congregation or small group.

MOVE YOUR THUMB
Introduction–Most of us have done what a little boy does on a beautiful starlit night standing in the front yard of his home. He holds his thumb up between him and the moon. He moves it until that floating white ball of light disappears. In order to see the moon again, he simply moves his thumb. It is not that the moon disappears, it is that the thumb is in the way of seeing the moon.

Often it is the little problem right in front of us that will blind us to the incredible destiny that awaits us. We can’t see what Heaven offers us for the thumb that is in the way.

So, I am here this morning to say to you: MOVE YOUR THUMB!

Matthew 17:20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

Jesus said we could move mountains so surely we can move our own thumbs.

3 Steps to Influence Destiny

1. Imagine it! — God saw the world before He created it.
Rely on the creativity of God that has been placed inside of you. This is the ability to see things before they can be seen and must be a component of any vision.
In 1961 the most powerful man in the world spoke to congress and the world. What he said was astounding and viewed by many to be foolish, but he saw something  that he begin to speak out.
In that speech to Congress, on May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy  challenged the nation to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade.

A year later, John F. Kennedy gave a speech at Rice University  on September 12, 1962 where he began declaring that a choice had been made based on what he said and had seen.

“ We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy – but because they are hard! Because that challenge is one we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone and one we intend to win!”
Less than a decade later on July 20, 1969, Commander Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon. With a crackling voice carried to the eager ears of the whole world, he said the historic words, "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."  Kennedy’s words came true.

2. Believe it! — Your heart must go with your head. to believe to see the impossible is to partner with God who can do all things. Jesus said nothing is impossible to those who believe.

John F. Kennedy – speech in Dublin, Ireland, June 28, 1963
“ We need men who can dream of things that never were.”

Like God who calls things that are not as though they were, we must learn to see what God wants us to see in the unseen realm so we can agree with it and bring it into the seen realm. This requires faith.

Jesus said, “Nothing would be impossible for us.”

“Science has not yet mastered prophecy. We predict too much for the next year and yet far too little for the next 10.”–Neil Armstrong

Like Armstrong says above, we do tend to want to be involved in something that is going to happen overnight instead of seeing farther but accomplishing something greater. God sees the future, and can lead us how to prepare for it.

3. Do it! — This is what separates dreamers from doers. I am not talking about running off half-cocked. I am saying move into what God has placed before you. There comes a time to break up camp and cross the Jordan.

I think we’re going to the moon because it’s in the nature of the human being to face challenges. It’s by the nature of his deep inner soul… we’re required to do these things just as salmon swim upstream.–Neil Armstrong

It is in our nation to exercise dominion, whether it’s the planets in the galaxy, the other football team, or that vacant lot that we bought. We are made to govern and overcome. The fall causes us to use this in wrong ways, but all of us to possess it.

So we are wired to do it! We just need to be sure that “it” is what God wants us to do. Jesus said, he saw what the Father was doing and that was what he did. This is how we are to operate. We see it (imagine it), we believe it (we trust it is God speaking), and we do it (faith in action).

Conclusion:
So there are 2 Men we studied today –Kennedy and Armstrong
1. Kennedy –The Man who said we’d do it. (He rallied a nation)

John F. Kennedy -- Our problems are man-made, therefore they may be solved by man. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings.

2. Armstrong–The Man who did it. (He was sent by a nation)
If we can just have faith in what God has shown us, a mustard seed of faith, and begin to declare what we believe in our heart. It can turn things around and align us with our God given destiny.

Later when reflecting on his trip to the moon, Neil Armstrong make a remark that shows you how things can get reversed when you choose to move forward.

“I put up my thumb and it blotted out the planet Earth.” –Neil Armstrong

3 Steps to Accomplish Your Destiny

Here’s a brief idea for a sermon. Would make a great guickie when you need to share an inspirational thought to a small group. Or develop it into a full grown bombshell.

1. Imagine it! — God saw the world before He created it.
Rely on the creativity of God that has been placed inside of you. This is the ability to see things before they can be seen and must be a component of any vision.

2. Believe it! — Your heart must go with your head. to believe to see the impossible is to partner with God who can do all things. Jesus said nothing is impossible to those who believe.

I have a question to ask you today–

Can Words Make Wishes Come True?

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I’d save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you
(Time in a Bottle, Jim Croce)

Key Passage

John 6:60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” 61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before?

John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him.

John 6:65 And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.” 66 From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.

In the passages just before above passage Jesus had been sharing his destiny, his dreams with his followers. He spoke of eating his flesh and drinking his blood. They were offended and confused because he had said he was the bread who had come down from heaven. He challenged by saying, "What if you see me go back up to heaven?" Jesus experienced what we often experience when we share our dreams with people. Today I want to talk about how words can release destiny. How they can make your wished come true.

(You can listen to this message online at www.gracehouse.info and click on sermons)

Warning!
Today we will be studying one principle that will work in two different kingdoms!

There are three challenges I will make to you in understanding how dreams make your wishes come true:

1. Sort it out!
Jesus said there was flesh and Spirit. The Spirit gives life and the flesh profits nothing. How can you tell which one it is so that you can be sure what your sensing as your destiny is from the Lord? Here are some questions to help you.

Your Sort Questions
Is it flesh or spirit? (John 6:63)
Whose kingdom will it serve? (Matt.6:10)
Is it dark or light? (Ps 119:130)
Does it fulfill the golden rule? (Matt. 7:12)
Does it condemn? (John 3:17)
Does it redeem? (Luke 19:10)
Does it destroy the Devil’s work? (1 Jo.3:8)
Is it true? (John 14:6)
What will it do for humanity? (John 3:16)

“Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.”
Horace Mann’s challenge to the 1859 graduating class of Antioch University.

2. Speak it out!

The release of the human voice into the realm of earth is a powerful thing. God created the universe by speaking. The first assignment he gave Adam was to release his voice in a creative way to name the animals. We underestimate the power of our words. It is important to understand when to release these words. God’s promises are powerful and something happens when a person has faith in their heart for a promise and they speak it out.

The struggle of the unspoken thought! –Learning to discern when to share and not to share your dream with someone.
Share your dream with friends.
Speak life over the dreams of others.

The verse of an folk song tells the tale.
Home, home on the range
Where the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day

On the range there are no people so there are no discouraging words!

Let’s commit to stop bashing other people’s dreams just because we don’t understand them.
No Dream Bashing Allowed!

Don’t Expect Everyone to Understand the words you speak
John 6: 60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?”
John 6: 66 From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.

3. Sweat it out!

Your path will cross paths with the dream killers. Do like Joseph did when he was faced with what looked like an impossible situation concerning his dream–He just kept doing the right thing and working hard no matter where he was. He went from the pit to Potiphers, to prison, to the Palace of Pharoah.

Saying + doing
Talk is cheap!
The will of God is to be DONE!
