How to Be a More Thankful Person

Ps. 104: 4  Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,  [And] into His courts with praise.  Be thankful to Him, [and] bless His name.

Ps. 69: 30  I will praise the name of God with a song,  And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.

PS. 95: 2  Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;  Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

Hebrews 13:15 Therefore by him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to
God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the spirit.

Illus–A pig will ear acorns from underneath an oak tree all its life and never look up to the tree from where they are falling. People can do the same thing.

Biblical example of what happens to people who murmur and grumble–The Children of Israel

Ideas:
THERE’S NO GAINING THROUGH COMPLAINING
WE INVITE A RUMBLE WHEN WE GRUMBLE

HOW TO BE A MORE THANKFUL PERSON

1. REFUSE TO TAKE GOD AND HIS BLESSINGS FOR GRANTED.
REFUSE TO TAKE PEOPLE AND THEIR BLESSINGS FOR GRANTED.

We often use people’s  faithfulness to us against them. We do this by heaping our expectation upon them and grumbling at them for not doing what they do not have to do.

2.    MAKE YOUR APPRECIATION GREATER THAN YOUR EXPECTATION
Illus—I once heard a minister share this illustration that is very powerful. Imagine someone comes to your house and gives you a hundred dollars everyday for 30 days and then stops—you would probably complain about the fact that they stopped. Yet, every day before that was sheer grace and gift to you.

3.    ALWAYS  APPRECIATE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE
What have you done for me lately, God!
Paul and Silas in prison.

4.    MAKE YOUR THANKSGIVING PRESENT TENSE
Illus–The other day I was just flooded with thoughts of my Dad. I found myself thinking
of how much I would like to just sit down and talk to him. Tell him how much I love him
and miss him. Tell him I much I thank him for being my dad. I thought of how many
opportunities I could have taken to visit him that I didn’t take advantage of.

Then I thought of my heavenly Father. Do I really take the opportunities that I should to thank
him. Do it now!

5. REMEMBER THAT YOUR GRATITUDE  SHAPES YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARD GOD

Being thankful says a lot about us and what we think about someone else.
You can tell if a man appreciates his wife by his attitude toward her. etc.
