4 Do Nots You Do not Want to Miss

by Eddie Lawrence

Hebrews 12:5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:

“My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,

Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;

6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens,

And scourges every son whom He receives.”

7 If[b] you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?

4 Do Not's about God's Correction:

1. Do Not Despise It!
 v5
Rather than slamming the door on God's correction, we should put out the welcome mat for it.

2. Do Not Be Discouraged by It! v5

It's intended purpose is the opposite of disouragement. Do you realize how much discouragement and pain the Lord's correction actually can spare us, if we heed it?

3. Do Not View It as God Not Loving You! v6-9

It is actually the evidence of God's love. Think of an earthly father or mother who just let's their children do as they please without regard to the results of their actions or behavior. We would all draw the conclusion that those parents do not love their kids. Yet, when God corrects, we can be tempted to interpret it as not being loved by God. Hmmm….let's rethink this.

4. Do Not View It as Rejection! v6b

Actually, Father's correction is preparation for greater intimacy because it educates you more deeply into the ways of God and establishes you more deeply in His love and acceptance. So, correction can acutally break the power of rejection off our life because it makes us feel valued, accepted and secure that Father would love us enough to help us on the right path and protect us from coming danger.
